  • Which fabrics can take an iron-on patch, and which cannot

    Application

    Nearly every failed iron-on is a fabric problem rather than a technique problem. The film needs a surface it can flow into and a temperature the fabric survives, and a surprising number of garments offer neither.

    Short answer. Cotton and cotton-rich wovens take a heat-seal patch. Leather, nylon, polyester shells, waterproofs, fleece and stretch knits do not. On those, sew it, or use a flexible adhesive intended for that material — and expect the adhesive to be a positioning aid rather than the attachment.

    Test on a hidden area first, every time. An inside hem, a seam allowance, the tail of a shirt. Fabric content labels are often incomplete and coatings are invisible. Thirty seconds of testing is the difference between a patched jacket and a ruined one.

    Can you iron a patch onto leather?

    No, and the reason is worth knowing because people try it anyway. Leather is a protein. Heat at the temperatures heat-seal film needs will shrink it, stiffen it, darken it and gloss it, and every one of those changes is permanent — there is no conditioning it back. On suede the nap crushes flat. On waxed cotton the wax melts out of the pressed area and leaves a pale patch that never re-blends.

    What works on leather:

    • Stitching, with a leather needle and a strong bonded thread. On a vest or jacket back this is the standard method and it looks right.
    • A flexible contact adhesive intended for leather. Applied thinly to both faces, left to tack, then pressed together. Not a general-purpose craft glue.
    • Rivets or snaps, if the patch is going somewhere that takes stress and you have the tools.

    Bear in mind that stitching leather is permanent in a different way: the needle holes stay when the patch comes off. Position it once.

    Can you iron a patch onto nylon?

    No. Nylon softens and melts in a range that overlaps what the adhesive needs, so there is no safe window — you either fail to bond or you damage the fabric, and quite often both. Most packs, shells, windbreakers and stuff sacks are nylon, usually with a polyurethane coating on the inside that is destroyed well before the outer face shows anything.

    On fabric glue

    This page is not going to name a best fabric glue, and it is worth saying why rather than just leaving it out. Adhesive performance depends on the specific pair of materials being joined, the flex the joint will see, and the wash regime it will live through. No general ranking survives contact with those variables, and the pages that publish one have not tested it on your jacket.

    What is useful is knowing which kind of adhesive suits which job:

    The rule that holds across all of them: glue is how you hold a patch still while you stitch it. Any adhesive strong enough to be a permanent attachment on a flexing, washed garment is also stiff enough to be uncomfortable and to crack.

    What to do instead, by garment

    • Shell jacket or pack — stitch a hook-and-loop panel, or sew the patch directly to a flat panel you can reach behind.
    • Leather vest or jacket — sew it, or use a hide adhesive and then sew it.
    • Fleece or knitwear — sew it, with light interfacing behind if the fabric is loose.
    • Performance kit — consider whether it needs a patch at all; if it does, sew with a ballpoint needle and a stitch that stretches.
    • Anything certified — ask before you modify it.

    Which fabrics does iron-on actually work on?

    Can you iron a patch onto polyester?

  • How to iron on letters so the word sits straight

    Application

    Individual iron-on letters look like the easy option and they are the fiddliest thing in this trade. The adhesive behaves exactly as it does on a patch. What makes letters hard is that a word has to sit straight, and there are six or eight chances to get that wrong instead of one.

    Short answer. Lay the whole word out and mark a baseline before any heat touches the garment. Align the letters on that line, not by the tops of the tiles. Press the middle letters first and work outwards. Then stitch them, because letters lift even faster than patches do.

    Align to the baseline, not the tops

    This is the mistake that makes home-done lettering look home-done, and it is entirely avoidable. Letters are cut to their own shapes, so the tiles are different heights: a lower-case g has a tail, an a does not, a capital R is taller than both. Line the tiles up by their top edges and every letter with a descender rides high.

    1. Draw a light baseline on the garment with tailor’s chalk or a water-soluble pen. A long ruler and a straight seam to measure from beats eyeballing it every time.
    2. Sit each letter on that line. Descenders — g, j, p, q, y — cross it and hang below. That is correct.
    3. Capitals and most lower-case letters sit on it exactly. Round letters like o, e and c may extend a hair below; that is how type works and it is invisible at a glance.

    Spacing

    Even gaps between the tiles do not produce even-looking spacing, because the letters inside them are different widths. What the eye reads is the area of white between the letter shapes, not the distance between their boxes.

    • Set the gap by eye between the letter shapes, not the tile edges. A capital A next to a capital V needs less gap than two capital H’s.
    • If you are aligning by measurement, start with an even tile gap and then close up the pairs that look loose — usually anything next to A, V, W, T, Y or a full stop.
    • Squint at it. Blurring the word is the oldest trick in typesetting and it shows spacing problems immediately.

    Centring

    Centre the whole word, not the middle letter. Lay everything out, measure from the outside edge of the first letter to the outside edge of the last, halve it, and align that midpoint to your centre line. A word with an odd number of letters does not centre on its middle letter unless every letter happens to be the same width, which they never are.

    Pressing them

    1. Turn steam off and empty the reservoir, then pre-press the area dry.
    2. Position every letter and check the whole word before applying any heat. Once a letter is tacked it is hard to move without marking the fabric.
    3. Tack the letters lightly first — a couple of seconds each — working from the middle of the word outwards. Starting at one end lets small errors accumulate along the line.
    4. Step back and read the word before you commit. This is the last easy moment.
    5. Press properly, one letter at a time, with a cover cloth and firm downward pressure. Do not slide.
    6. Turn the garment inside out and press again from the back.
    7. Let it cool completely before moving it.

    Follow the temperature and dwell time on the letters’ own instruction sheet. Letter transfers use a range of different adhesives and films, and a figure that works for one brand will underheat or glaze another.

    Why letters lift sooner than patches

    A letter has a bad ratio. Its perimeter is long relative to its area — think of the inside of an e or the two legs of an R — and the edge is where heat-seal film fails first. A patch has one edge to protect. A six-letter word has dozens, several of them tiny.

    Which is why the honest advice for letters is the same as for patches, only more so: heat positions them and thread keeps them. Stitch round each letter just inside its edge, in a matching thread. It is slow and it is the difference between a name that lasts a season and one that lasts the garment.

    If the wording is fixed and you want it to last, a single embroidered name patch outlasts individual letters by a wide margin.

    Fabric first, as always

    Common questions

    How do I keep iron-on letters straight?

  • Motorcycle patches to avoid if you are not in a club

    Insignia

    Most patches are decoration. A small number are claims of membership in an organisation that did not invite you, and the people who did not invite you take that seriously. This page is about telling the two apart.

    Short answer. Avoid anything that reads as club colours: a three-piece configuration, a bottom rocker naming a territory, the MC cube, the 1% diamond, and any patch resembling a real club’s centre mark or its support patches. Everything else — rally patches, brand patches, flags, skulls, your own artwork — is yours to wear.

    Why this is not superstition

    It is easy to read advice like this as folklore about a subculture. It is not. Two separate mechanisms make it real, and they operate independently of each other.

    The first is the convention described in what the patches on a motorcycle vest mean: colours are club property, only members wear them, and letting them reach an outsider is treated as a serious failure by the member responsible. Someone wearing colours they were not given is not making a style choice as far as a club is concerned. They are making a claim.

    The second is ordinary intellectual property law, and it is thoroughly documented. Club insignia is trademarked and enforced. The Hells Angels hold federal registrations dating back to the 1970s and have brought actions against Marvel, Disney over the film Wild Hogs, Alexander McQueen and Saks Fifth Avenue over handbags and jewellery, Toys “R” Us, and Redbubble. Their counsel described the aim as educating the public that the marks “are well guarded, not generic and must not be infringed.”

    So a manufactured knock-off carries a legal exposure and a social one, and neither depends on the other.

    What to avoid

    The three-piece format is the one people get wrong most often, because it is a genuinely good composition and it looks right on a vest. If you like the look, the fix is easy: keep a large centre piece and drop the rockers, or use one continuous piece rather than three. Building a patch jacket covers the alternatives.

    What is fine to wear

    • Rally, run and event patches. They record that you were somewhere. Anyone who was there can wear one.
    • Manufacturer and brand patches. Bought and worn openly by everyone.
    • Flags, service patches you are entitled to, memorials for your own people.
    • Your own artwork, or a design made for you, provided it is not imitating a club’s mark or arranged as colours.
    • Riding club and social group patches for groups you actually ride with, in a one-piece format.
    • Skulls, wings, engines, and the whole visual vocabulary of motorcycling. None of this is claimed by anyone. It is the specific arrangements and specific marks that are.

    Front placement, and why nobody can give you a rule

    “What are the rules for the front of a vest” is one of the most searched questions in this subject and it has an unsatisfying answer: there is no universal convention. Within a club, the front is specified by that club, in detail, and members do not improvise. Outside a club, there is nothing to follow, because there is no authority to follow.

    What independent riders generally do, and it is a convention rather than a rule: small patches only, kept off the areas where a club would put position and name patches, and nothing arranged as a matched left-and-right pair that mimics the way a member’s front is laid out. Beyond that it is composition, not protocol.

    If you are having patches made

    Any manufacturer worth using will decline a job that reproduces a club’s mark, and will tell you why. If a supplier is happy to make you a three-piece with a territory rocker and someone else’s centre mark, that is a supplier who will take your money and hand you the entire risk.

    1. Design your own centre mark. It is the whole point, and it is the part that will still look good in ten years.
    2. Avoid a bottom rocker entirely, or use one that names nothing geographic — a phrase, a year, your own club’s made-up name.
    3. Do not add MC to anything unless you are one.
    4. If you are forming a genuine riding club, a one-piece back patch is the conventional and uncontroversial choice.
    5. If you are unsure whether a design reads as colours, show it to someone who rides in a club. They will tell you in about four seconds.

    A note on tone

    Advice on this subject tends to arrive either as breathless warnings about violence or as a shrug. Neither is useful. The accurate version is that clubs care about their insignia the way any organisation cares about its identity, they have both social and legal means of defending it, and the overwhelming majority of what you might want to put on a vest does not go anywhere near it.

    Know which few things are claimed, avoid those, and wear whatever you like.

  • What the patches on a motorcycle vest actually mean

    Insignia

    A cut is a document. Read in the right order it tells you what kind of club the wearer belongs to, where that club sits, and what the wearer’s role in it is. Read wrongly — which is what most of the internet does — it tells you a great deal of folklore.

    Short answer. The three patches on the back are the colours: club name on top, the club’s own mark in the middle, territory on the bottom. They belong to the club, not the member. Almost every “secret meaning” you will read about a number or a small patch is claimed rather than documented, and this page says which is which.

    The cut and the colours

    The sleeveless jacket is a cut. The patches on its back are the colours. That word does most of the work in this subject, because colours are not decoration and they are not the wearer’s property. As one reference puts it, “the club patches always remain the property of the club itself, not the members, and only members are allowed to wear the club’s patches.”

    The same source notes what follows from that: “a member must closely guard their colours, for allowing one’s colours to fall into the hands of an outsider is an act of disgrace and may result in loss of membership.” That is the single most important thing to understand before reading anything else on this page.

    One piece, two pieces, three pieces

    The number of pieces is the first thing to read, and it is a genuine convention rather than folklore. The usual description is “a one-piece patch for nonconformist social clubs, a two-piece patch for clubs paying dues, a three-piece patch for outlaw clubs.”

    The bottom rocker is the piece that carries the most weight, because it usually names a territory. A club claiming a region on its bottom rocker is making a statement to every other club, and that is why an outsider wearing one is not read as a fashion choice.

    The MC cube

    The small square reading MC sits beside the colours and marks the wearer as belonging to a motorcycle club in the formal sense, as opposed to a riding club (RC), a motorcycle association, or one of the many social groups that ride together without the structure.

    The distinction matters more than it looks. RC and social groups generally have open membership and no territory. An MC in this sense is a chartered organisation with a hierarchy, a probationary process, and rules about who may wear what. Wearing the cube without the club is claiming membership of something.

    The 1% diamond, and where the story came from

    Some clubs wear a small diamond reading 1%. The standard explanation, repeated on nearly every page that discusses it, is that after the Hollister rally of 1947 the American Motorcyclist Association said that 99 per cent of motorcyclists were law-abiding and one per cent were not, and that certain clubs adopted the label in defiance.

    That story is not documented. The AMA says it has no record of ever releasing such a statement, and its own public information director has described the attribution as apocryphal. The quotation is usually dated to 1960, thirteen years after the rally it is supposed to respond to. What is well documented is the rally itself, and that the famous Life photograph of a drunk man on a bike surrounded by bottles was, according to an eyewitness, staged by the photographer.

    None of that makes the patch meaningless. Clubs that wear the diamond are claiming the term deliberately, and it is read exactly as intended. It just means the origin story is a story — and a page that tells it as settled history is telling you something about its own sourcing.

    The numbers

    This is where the folklore is thickest. The honest position on almost every numeric patch is that several meanings circulate, they contradict each other, and no motorcycle organisation, court record or reference work establishes any of them.

    Claimed meanings include the thirteenth letter of the alphabet standing for motorcycle, or for marijuana, or for methamphetamine; a signal of support for cannabis legalisation; simple membership of the wider riding community; and a deliberate embrace of an unlucky number. Even mainstream coverage that lists these concludes that the patch “doesn’t have a single, universal definition” and that its meaning “shifts depending on the motorcycle club, region, and even the individual rider.”

    That is the correct answer. Anyone telling you it definitely means one specific thing is guessing with confidence.

    The widely repeated reading is twelve jurors, one judge and a half chance. It is memorable, it is plausible, and it has no traceable origin. Treat it as a saying rather than a fact.

    Named patches with lurid explanations

    A number of small patches associated with particular clubs have explanations attached to them that involve violence — the “Filthy Few” patch is the most frequently discussed. The claimed meanings are repeated constantly and have never been confirmed by the clubs concerned, and they have been disputed in court reporting. This site is not going to assert them. If you are researching this seriously, published journalism and court records are the sources; a patch supplier’s blog is not.

    The rest of the cut

    • Position patches — President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Sergeant at Arms, Road Captain. These are offices, and they are worn by whoever currently holds them.
    • Support patches are worn by people connected to a club without being full members. They carry the club’s colours in some form and are issued, not bought.
    • Memorial patches for members who have died. Often dated, often the most personal thing on the cut.
    • Rally and event patches, which mean exactly what they say and are the one category anyone can wear.
    • Front patches vary enormously. There is no universal convention: some clubs specify the front precisely and others leave it to the member.

    Why the meanings are so unreliable

    Three reasons, and they compound. Clubs do not publish their internal conventions, so there is nothing authoritative to check against. Meanings genuinely do vary between clubs and regions, so two contradictory answers can both be locally true. And the commercial pages that dominate this subject have an incentive to sound certain, because certainty sells patches.

    If you want to know what a specific patch means on a specific cut, the only reliable method is to ask its wearer, politely, and accept that the answer may be that it is not your business.

    On reproduction. Club insignia is protected. The Hells Angels alone hold federal trademarks dating to the 1970s and have brought infringement actions against Marvel, Disney, Alexander McQueen and Saks, Toys “R” Us and Redbubble, among others. Their counsel has described the strategy as educating the public that the marks “are well guarded, not generic and must not be infringed.” Writing about insignia is lawful.     Air Force placement is the one that can be checked properly. The instruction is published openly, it carries a date, and it is specific enough to quote — so this page quotes it.

    The OCP coat

    Duty identifiers

    The duty identifier is the short patch some career fields wear on the left sleeve. The instruction describes it as a “spice brown subdued cloth patch centered at the top of the Velcro® area”, worn by certain Air Force Specialty Codes while performing their duties. Table 5.1 of the instruction lists the authorised identifiers and qualification tabs for the left sleeve.

    • A maximum of five letters.
    • Standard spice brown subdued colour scheme.
    • No larger than the tactical flag patch: 3¼ in wide by 1-13/16 in tall.
    • Patches with black borders distinguish first responders and career fields that need to be identified quickly.

    One exception that trips people up. The instruction states that “the ‘FIRE’ duty identifier (with black border) will only be worn on the two-piece flight duty uniform” and that wear of that identifier on the OCP uniform is not authorised. This restriction is specific to the FIRE identifier — other authorised duty identifiers are still worn on OCP.

    Why the flag faces the way it does

    The reversed-field flag confuses people who assume it is a mistake or a special version. It is neither. The convention treats the wearer as a flagpole moving forward: the canton — the field of blue — leads, and the stripes stream behind. On the wearer’s right sleeve that puts the blue toward the front of the body, which from the outside looks like a mirror image of the flag on a wall.

    This is why a flag patch bought without checking can end up facing the wrong way. The two versions are made and sold separately, and they are not interchangeable.

    What this page does not cover

    • Service dress and mess dress. Different uniforms, different rules, different chapters.
    • The two-piece flight duty uniform, which has its own placement and its own exceptions — the FIRE identifier above is one of them.
    • Space Force. Guardians follow SPFI 36-2903, a separate instruction with its own guidance memoranda.
    • Entitlement. Which patches, tabs and badges you may wear is the substance of the instruction and is not something a placement drawing answers.
    • Chest tape geometry. It is in the instruction’s figures, which are the part of a PDF that does not survive being summarised.

    How to check it yourself

    1. Go to Air Force e-Publishing and pull the current DAFI 36-2903. Check the date on the cover.
    2. Check for a more recent guidance memorandum. These are issued between editions and they change the instruction while it stands.
    3. Read Table 5.1 for duty identifiers and qualification tabs, and the OCP figures for tape and badge geometry.
    4. Ask your unit. Major command supplements exist and they bind you on top of the instruction.

  • Army OCP patch placement: what side each patch goes on

    Which sleeve carries what on the OCP coat, and where to get the measurements. This page is deliberately short on numbers, and the reason is worth reading before you go looking for them elsewhere.

    Short answer. The U.S. flag goes on the wearer’s right sleeve. The shoulder sleeve insignia for your current organisation goes on the wearer’s left. Everything else — the tapes, rank, badges, and every measurement — is set out in DA PAM 670-1, and this page does not reproduce it.

    Why this page has no measurement table

    Army placement is governed by two documents. AR 670-1 is the regulation; it sets policy and then explicitly hands off the detail. Its own summary of changes records that it “deletes all procedural guidance regarding uniforms, insignia, and other uniform accessories,” pointing to the pamphlet instead. DA PAM 670-1 is where the placement paragraphs and the figures actually live.

    Both are published by the Army Publishing Directorate. When this page was written, that site could not be read automatically, and the copies circulating on other hosts carried four different dates — 2014, 2015, 2017 and a January 2021 edition. A measurement lifted from a superseded edition looks exactly like a current one, and there is no way to tell them apart on a patch supplier’s blog.

    So this page publishes the two sleeve facts that three independent sources agreed on, and stops. If you want the tape geometry, the rank position or any figure in inches, get the current DA PAM 670-1 from the Army Publishing Directorate and read chapter 21. That is not a cop-out; it is the only version of this answer that is safe to act on.

    The two sleeves

    This answers the question most people are actually asking. What side does the U.S. Army patch go on? Your unit patch — the shoulder sleeve insignia for your current organisation — goes on your left arm. The flag goes on your right. If you are looking at a photograph rather than wearing the coat, both appear on the opposite side of the picture from the side they are worn on.

    What the sleeves carry, and what is not confirmed here

    Every row marked “not confirmed” has a confident-looking answer on a dozen commercial sites. Some of those answers are probably right. None of them tells you which edition it came from, which is the only thing that would let you check.

    One change worth knowing about

    In February 2025 the Secretary of the Army issued HQDA Execute Order 123-25, directing uniformed soldiers supporting garrison operations to wear the shoulder sleeve insignia of their installation senior commander’s unit, rather than the patch they had been wearing. That changes which patch is worn, not where it goes — the SSI is still on the upper left arm.

    It is a useful illustration of why dates matter on a page like this. A guide written in 2024 would have been silently wrong for a large number of soldiers within a year, and would have looked no different.

    How to get the answer you can act on

    1. Go to the Army Publishing Directorate and download the current DA PAM 670-1. Check the date on the cover before you read anything.
    2. Read the placement paragraphs for the item you care about, not a summary of them. The figures carry the measurements.
    3. If you are in a unit, ask your first-line supervisor or your unit’s command team. Local guidance exists on top of the pamphlet and it is binding on you.
    4. Do not take a measurement from a patch supplier, including this site. Suppliers make the patch; they do not set where it goes.

    Where each badge sits on the Scouts BSA field uniform shirt, taken from the two publications that govern it rather than from another website. Every position below is quoted, and the date it was checked is on the page.

    Sources and date. Checked on 5 September 2026 against the Guide to Awards and Insignia (publication No. 33066, July 2024 revision) and the Field Uniform Checklist, Scouts BSA (publication No. 510-784, June 2024). Where those two use different wording for the same position, both are given below. Check the publication before you sew. These documents are revised, and this page is a reading of them, not a substitute for them.

    A note on the names

    The organisation is now Scouting America. The name changed from Boy Scouts of America on 8 February 2025, announced the previous May. The programme names did not change: it is still Cub Scouting, Scouts BSA, Venturing, Sea Scouts and Exploring.

    For uniforms this matters very little. New shirts carry “Scouting America” lettering over the right pocket; everything else is the same, existing uniforms stay valid, and no insignia moved. If you are searching for “Boy Scout patch placement”, this is the page you want — the positions are unchanged.

    The positions

    Left means the wearer’s left throughout. On the drawing above, the wearer’s left sleeve is on the right-hand side. This is the single most common source of error in patch placement, and it is why the drawing says so on its face.

    Sleeves

    Both sleeves are numbered from the shoulder seam downwards. Position 1 sits directly below the seam on each side.

    Where the sources I could read did not agree. The Guide numbers the patrol emblem’s position on the right sleeve, but the text I was able to read did not state the number unambiguously, and one reading put both the patrol emblem and the Journey to Excellence award at position 3. They cannot both be right. The numbering implies the patrol emblem is position 2, directly below the flag, with position 3 being the four-inch mark used on both sleeves — but that is an inference, not a citation. Confirm this one against the Guide. I would rather tell you the gap than fill it.

    How to check this yourself

    1. Open the Guide to Awards and Insignia and find the section for your programme. It is the governing document; everything else, including this page, is a reading of it.
    2. Download the Field Uniform Checklist, Scouts BSA. It is one page, it is the most precise source for measurements, and it is what an inspection is actually scored against.
    3. Check the revision date on whatever you download. Both documents are revised, and a figure from an old edition looks exactly like a figure from the current one.
    4. Ask your unit leader or council advancement chair about anything that is still unclear. Local practice on temporary insignia and unit-specific items varies more than the paperwork suggests.

  • How to identify and date an old patch

    Collecting

    You cannot date a patch from a photograph, and you cannot date it from the design. What you can do is read its construction — how the edge was finished, what the base is, what is on the back — and narrow the field considerably before you ask anyone else.

    Short answer. Record six things: the edge finish, the base cloth, the backing, the thread, the size, and any maker’s mark. Together they tell you roughly how a patch was made, which narrows when and where. No single feature dates anything on its own, and every one of them has been reproduced.

    Read the construction, not the design

    Designs are copied endlessly. A unit emblem drawn in 1943 is still being drawn today, and a reproduction can be visually perfect. Manufacturing is much harder to fake convincingly, because it means using the period’s machinery and materials rather than the period’s artwork.

    So the questions worth asking are all about how the object was made. None of them is conclusive alone. Together they build a picture.

    Three constructions. The edge and the back are the two features that survive wear and are hardest to fake, which makes them the two worth looking at first.

    The six things to record

    1. The edge

    • Hand-turned or hand-embroidered edges — the cloth folded under and stitched, or the border worked by hand — indicate a patch made before or outside industrial production. Look for slight irregularity in the stitch spacing.
    • A merrowed edge, the raised overlock bead, means a merrow machine, which limits the outline to shapes with no inside corners.
    • A hot-cut or laser-cut edge — sealed, flat, often with a satin stitch just inside it — is a modern industrial finish and effectively rules out an early patch.

    2. The base cloth

    Turn a corner over and look at what the embroidery sits on. Wool felt, cotton twill and synthetic twill all feel and look different, and a synthetic base narrows the possibilities considerably. Felt with moth damage tells you something about age and something about storage.

    3. The back

    • Bare cloth, with the stitching visible from behind, is the simplest construction.
    • Cheesecloth or gauze bonded across the back is a stabilising layer used in some periods and regions.
    • A smooth, slightly glossy film is heat-seal adhesive — modern, and by itself enough to answer the question for most people.
    • Hook tape is contemporary, though it is regularly added later to older patches, so it dates the modification rather than the patch.

    4. The thread

    Cotton and rayon threads have a different sheen from modern polyester, and they age differently — rayon in particular takes on a distinct dulling. Look at a colour in raking light rather than straight on. This one is a feel that takes handling several examples to develop, and it is worth being honest with yourself about not having it yet.

    5. Size and shape

    Measure it properly, in millimetres, and record the shape. Reproductions are frequently a few millimetres out from the original, because they were scanned from a photograph rather than made from a pattern. This only helps once you have a documented reference to compare against — but it is the single most useful thing to have written down when you find one.

    6. Marks

    Maker’s marks, contract numbers, stock numbers and printed labels on the back are the closest thing to a date stamp you will get. Photograph them before doing anything else, including cleaning.

    Photograph it before you touch it

    1. Front and back, flat, in daylight, with a ruler or scale bar in the frame.
    2. A raking-light shot — light from one side at a shallow angle — which reveals stitch direction and surface damage that flat light hides.
    3. A close-up of one edge and of any mark.
    4. Note where it came from and what you were told about it. Provenance is half the value, and the story is lost the moment it is not written down.

    Do not clean, trim, re-back or re-sew anything before it is identified. Every one of those reduces both the information available and, if the patch turns out to be of interest, its value. The urge to tidy an old patch is strong and should be resisted.

    Where to take it next

    Construction narrows the field; it will not name a unit. For that you need a documented reference, and the people who have them are generous with their time:

    • Regimental, unit and service museums hold reference collections and will usually look at a clear photograph.
    • Collector societies for the relevant service or period keep published reference works with documented examples.
    • Veterans’ associations often know insignia that never appeared in any official publication, particularly locally made and theatre-made pieces.
    • Auction archives from established militaria houses are a useful comparison set, because lots are described in detail and photographed well.

    A word on reproductions

    Reproduction is a legitimate and necessary part of this field. Re-enactment, film work and museum display all depend on it, and a well-made reproduction is a good object in its own right.

    The norm that keeps it legitimate is simple: reproductions are described as reproductions, at every point of sale and in every collection record. A patch sold as original when the seller knows otherwise is fraud, and a patch recorded honestly loses nothing.

  • How to build a patch jacket that looks composed

    Display

    A patch jacket is a composition, not a pile. The ones that look right have usually been laid out flat, photographed, and rearranged three times before a single stitch went in.

    Short answer. Choose a jacket with flat, unlined panels. Lay everything out on the floor and photograph it before committing. Sew, do not iron — denim takes heat, but the patch still lifts. Start with the back panel and work outwards.

    Choosing the jacket

    Almost any jacket can carry patches, but some make the job much easier. What you are looking for is flat area and access to the inside.

    • Denim and canvas trucker jackets are the default for a reason: stiff, flat panels, unlined, and the seams divide the back into a natural composition area.
    • Leather and denim vests give you the largest uninterrupted back panel of anything. Leather needs a leather needle and no heat at all.
    • Letterman and varsity jackets are traditionally chenille territory. The wool body takes stitches well; the leather sleeves need the same treatment as any hide.
    • Avoid, or plan carefully: quilted and padded jackets, where stitching passes through the wadding and puckers; anything lined, where you cannot reach the back of your own work; and technical shells, which should not be pierced at all.

    Second-hand is worth considering for a first one. A jacket you are not afraid of is a jacket you will actually finish.

    Lay it out before you sew anything

    1. Put the jacket flat on the floor, back panel up, and smooth it out.
    2. Arrange every patch you own on it. All of them, including the ones you are not sure about.
    3. Photograph it from directly above, standing on a chair.
    4. Take half the patches off and photograph it again.
    5. Compare the two photographs the next day. The second one is usually better.

    The photograph is the point of the exercise. Standing over an arrangement, your eye corrects for perspective and forgives crowding; a photograph does neither. It is also the only way to compare two arrangements honestly, because you cannot hold the first one in your head while you build the second.

    The back panel

    The back is the piece people see, and it is worth composing deliberately rather than filling. The classic arrangement is a large centre piece with a band above and a band below, all three the same width and evenly spaced.

    One thing to know before you build a three-piece back. That specific arrangement — a top rocker, a centre emblem and a bottom rocker — is the format motorcycle clubs use for their colours, and clubs treat it as theirs. Wearing something that reads as club colours, particularly with a territory rocker, is taken seriously by the people whose format it is. If you are not in a club, keep the arrangement but make sure the content is obviously not club insignia.

    If that gives you pause, the alternatives are good: one large centre piece alone, a dense mosaic with no hierarchy, or a vertical column down one side of the centre seam.

    Sleeves, chest and the rest

    • Sleeves are a tube. Open the cuff seam or work on a free arm, or you will sew the sleeve shut — a mistake almost everyone makes once.
    • Upper sleeve patches sit best about an inch below the shoulder seam, matching on both sides if you use two.
    • Chest patches go on the wearer’s left as a default, and stay clear of the button placket. A patch straddling the opening is the most common avoidable error.
    • Pocket flaps take small patches well and are the easiest place to start, because they come apart from the rest of the jacket.
    • Collar and cuffs only take very small pieces, and they abrade faster than anywhere else.

    Attaching them

    Denim will take an iron, and iron-on will hold on denim better than on most fabrics. It still lifts. On a jacket that is going to be worn hard, heat is for positioning and thread is for holding.

    1. Heat-tack or pin each patch in place, working from the photograph rather than by eye.
    2. Sew around the border with a backstitch by hand, or a straight stitch just inside the border by machine, using a heavy needle and strong thread.
    3. Work the back panel first while the jacket is still easy to handle, then the sleeves, then the front.
    4. Support the weight of the jacket as you sew so it is not dragging on the seam — that is what causes puckering, more often than tension.

    Living with it

    • Wash inside out, cold, gentle cycle, and not often. A patch jacket is not a garment that benefits from washing.
    • Air it rather than washing it wherever you can.
    • Never tumble dry. Heat plus mechanical action is exactly the pair that lifts edges.
    • Re-stitch a lifting corner the week you notice it. A lifted corner becomes a lost patch within a month.

  • How to display a patch collection without damaging it

    Display

    A patch collection has two enemies and neither of them is dust. Light fades thread permanently, and adhesive of any kind destroys the thing it is holding. Everything sensible about displaying patches follows from those two facts.

    Short answer. Mount patches so they can come off again — stitched to a board or a banner, pinned through a backing, or held in album pages. Keep them out of direct sun. Never glue, never tape, never trim a patch to fit a frame.

    The two things that actually damage a collection

    Light

    Dyed thread fades, and it fades unevenly — reds and purples go first, and a patch that has hung on a sunlit wall for two summers will have a visible shadow line where the frame edge protected it. This is not reversible. If a patch matters, it does not go opposite a window, and it does not go under a spotlight.

    If a display has to live in a bright room, UV-filtering glazing helps a great deal and costs a little more than ordinary glass. It slows the process rather than stopping it.

    Adhesive

    Glue, double-sided tape, mounting putty and self-adhesive album pages all fail the same way: the adhesive migrates into the base cloth, stains it from behind, hardens, and eventually cannot be removed without taking threads with it. Album pages sold as “magnetic” are the worst of these — they are not magnetic, they are adhesive, and they yellow.

    The rule that solves it: every mounting method should be reversible in five minutes with nothing sharper than a seam ripper. If it is not, do not use it.

    Four methods that work

    1. Framed, stitched to a mount board

    The best-looking option and the kindest to the patch. The patch is held with a few loops of fine thread passed through an acid-free mount board, and a spacer keeps the glazing off the surface so the thread is not crushed flat against glass.

    What a good frame is doing. The spacer and the acid-free board are the two parts people leave out, and they are the two parts that decide whether the patch survives the decade.
    • Acid-free board, front and back. Ordinary mount card is acidic and will yellow the patch from behind within a few years, in a rectangle you can see.
    • A spacer — a strip of board inside the rebate, or a deep box frame. Thread pressed against glass flattens permanently and picks up condensation.
    • Fine thread, matched to the patch, in a handful of loops through the border. Not through the embroidery.
    • A sealed back, taped along the frame edge, to keep dust and insects out.

    2. A felt or canvas banner

    The traditional Scout and club solution, and it scales better than framing. Patches are sewn to a length of felt, canvas or heavy cotton with a dowel top and bottom. It rolls for storage, it can grow, and nothing is permanent.

    Choose a fabric heavy enough not to sag between patches. Lay the whole arrangement out flat and photograph it before you sew anything, because the composition is much easier to fix on the floor than on the wall.

    3. Pinned to a covered board

    A cork or foam board covered in fabric, with patches held by stainless steel pins through the border. Fully reversible, endlessly rearrangeable, and the cheapest of the four.

    Use stainless or brass pins. Ordinary steel dressmaker’s pins rust in a few humid seasons and the rust marks are permanent.

    4. Album pages

    For a collection too large to display at once. Use archival polypropylene or Mylar pages — the same ones coin and stamp collectors use — and avoid PVC, which off-gasses and softens over time. Store the album flat rather than upright so the patches do not slump inside their pockets.

    Arranging it

    The composition is what makes a display look considered rather than accumulated. Three things do most of the work.

    • Pick one alignment and hold it. Either everything is on a grid, or everything is deliberately loose. A grid with three patches slightly off it looks like a mistake; a genuinely free arrangement does not.
    • Let the gaps be even, not the patches. Patches are different sizes and shapes. Equal spacing between edges reads as ordered; trying to make the patches themselves line up does not work.
    • Put the largest piece off-centre. Dead centre makes everything else look like it is orbiting. A third of the way in gives the eye somewhere to start.

    If the collection has a story — a sequence of ranks, a run of years, a tour — arrange it in that order and the display explains itself without a caption.

    Cleaning, carefully

    Most patches need nothing more than a soft brush. If one genuinely needs cleaning, test on the back first, work with the smallest amount of moisture that does anything, and never soak a patch with a felt base or a paper-stiffened back.

    Anything with real historical or personal value — a decoration, an issued badge, something inherited — is worth asking a textile conservator about before you clean or mount it. Most museums will answer a short question by email, and it costs nothing to ask.

    Storage for what is not on the wall

    • Flat, not folded. A fold line in a stiff patch becomes a crack.
    • Acid-free tissue between layers, not cling film or a plastic bag.
    • Somewhere with a stable temperature. Lofts and garages swing too far and condense.
    • Away from the wardrobe. Moths eat wool felt bases, and plenty of older patches have one.

    What is the best way to display a patch collection?

    Can I glue patches into a display?

    Are “magnetic” album pages safe?

    No. They are not magnetic, they are adhesive, and they yellow.

    Does sunlight really damage patches?

    Yes, permanently and unevenly. Reds and purples go first, and a patch that has hung on a sunlit wall for two summers will have a visible shadow line where the frame edge protected it. This is not reversible.

    Does the mount board matter?

    Ordinary mount card is acidic and will yellow the patch from behind within a few years, in a rectangle you can see. Use acid-free board front and back.

  • How to put a patch on a backpack without ruining it

    Application

    A backpack is the one garment-like object where the usual first instinct — reach for the iron — is not merely weaker but actively destructive. Almost every pack is made of exactly the fabrics that heat ruins.

    Short answer. Do not use heat. Backpacks are nylon or polyester, usually with a waterproof coating on the inside, and both melt or glaze below the temperature heat-seal film needs. Sew the patch on by hand, stitch down a hook-and-loop panel, or attach it to MOLLE webbing if the pack has any.

    Check two things before you start

    1. What the pack is made of

    Nearly all packs are woven nylon or polyester — Cordura, ripstop, ballistic nylon, packcloth. Turn the fabric over and look at the inside face: if it has a smooth, slightly rubbery or shiny film on it, that is a polyurethane waterproof coating. An iron will destroy that coating even when the outside face survives, and you will not see the damage until the pack leaks.

    Canvas and waxed-cotton packs are the exception on fabric, but waxed cotton has its own rule: no heat at all, because the wax melts out and leaves a permanent light patch.

    2. What is directly behind the panel

    This is the step that saves packs. Open the compartment behind where the patch is going and put your hand flat against the inside of the panel. You are checking for anything a needle must not go through:

    • A padded laptop or tablet sleeve — stitching through it puts a needle track across the thing it is meant to protect.
    • A hydration bladder pocket. A stitch line here is a leak waiting to happen.
    • A frame sheet or aluminium stay, which will stop a needle dead or bend it.
    • A waterproof liner or a taped seam. Stitching through either ends the pack’s weather resistance at that point.
    • Compression straps or a load-lifter anchor sewn on the inside. Catching one sews the pack shut in a way that is very annoying to unpick.

    If you cannot get your hand behind the panel, the patch is going in the wrong place. Pick a spot you can open up — a lid, a front pocket flap, a side panel — rather than working blind.

    Method 1 — sew it, by hand

    Hand sewing is the right call on a pack, not a compromise. A domestic machine struggles to reach into a three-dimensional bag, and forcing it usually means sewing two layers together by accident.

    1. Use a heavy or leather needle and a strong thread — bonded nylon, upholstery thread or waxed polyester. Ordinary cotton sewing thread abrades through against pack fabric.
    2. Hold the patch in place with a few small pieces of double-sided tape or a couple of pins through the border. Do not use glue.
    3. Work a backstitch or a whipstitch around the perimeter, just inside the patch border so the stitches sink into it. Keep them about 3 mm apart — longer and the edge lifts, much shorter and you are perforating the pack fabric into a tear line.
    4. Push the needle through and pull it out square, rather than rocking it. Ripstop tears along its grid if you enlarge a hole.
    5. Knot inside the compartment and pass the tail back under a few stitches rather than cutting it flush.

    A pair of pliers or a rubber jar-opener helps pull the needle through Cordura. A sailmaker’s palm helps even more if the pack is heavy fabric.

    Method 2 — a hook-and-loop panel

    If the patch will change — travel patches, unit or club badges, anything seasonal — stitch a loop panel to the pack once and swap patches onto it freely. This is the tidiest solution for a pack that collects badges.

    Panel, not patch. On a pack the panel is what gets stitched, so the needle goes through the fabric once and never again however many patches you cycle through.

    Stitch the panel through all four sides. Do not use its adhesive backing as the attachment — on a coated pack fabric it lifts within weeks, and it takes a strip of the coating with it. Full detail is in what a hook-and-loop patch is.

    Method 3 — MOLLE and PALS webbing

    If the pack has rows of horizontal webbing stitched at regular intervals, that is a PALS grid — the attachment system MOLLE gear uses. It is the easiest option of all and it needs no needle.

    • Hook-backed patches stick straight to a loop panel if the pack has one, which many tactical packs do above the grid.
    • Lace-through: a patch with a plain back can be held by weaving a length of webbing or a couple of cable ties through the PALS rows and over the patch edges. Crude, reversible, and it holds.
    • Patch holder panels are sold specifically for this — a loop-faced rectangle with MOLLE straps on the back. Attach the panel to the grid, then the patches to the panel.

    Method 4 — when the pack must not be pierced

    Rented, borrowed, warranty-critical or genuinely waterproof packs sometimes should not take a stitch at all. Two options that leave no trace:

    • Attach to a removable panel. Sew the patches to a canvas or denim rectangle and clip or lace that to the pack.
    • Attach to the straps or grab handle rather than the body — a patch wrapped round a shoulder strap and stitched to itself pierces nothing.

    Safety pins are the classic answer and they do work, but they leave permanent holes in ripstop and they open in transit. If you use them, use them on a lid or a pocket flap, never on a load-bearing panel.

    What makes a backpack good for patches

    If you are choosing a pack with patches in mind rather than working with one you already own, four things matter more than brand.

    • A large flat panel. The front face of a boxy pack takes a patch far better than a rounded, panel-loaded one. Curved surfaces lift patch edges.
    • A loop-faced panel already fitted. Many tactical and EDC packs have one above the webbing. It is the single feature that makes a pack genuinely patch-friendly, because nothing needs piercing.
    • MOLLE or PALS webbing. Even without a loop panel, the grid gives you a lace-through attachment and takes an add-on patch panel.
    • Access behind the panel. A pack you can open up and get a hand inside is a pack you can sew. A sealed or heavily padded front is not.

    Canvas and waxed-cotton daypacks are the other good answer: heavy, flat, unlined, and thick enough to take stitching without needing anything behind it. What to avoid is the opposite of the list above — rounded technical packs with sealed seams, taped waterproof liners, and no flat face anywhere.

    Where to put it

    Backpacks have no seam conventions the way garments do, so placement is a judgement rather than a measurement. Three things do hold:

    • Pick a flat, unsupported panel. A patch across a seam, a zip, a compression strap or a curved corner will lift at whichever edge sits proudest.
    • Stay clear of contact areas. The bottom panel and the back panel take abrasion and body contact; a patch there wears out and is uncomfortable.
    • Leave clearance round zips. Give at least 20 mm, or the patch edge will foul the slider.

    One thing worth knowing before you sew anything to a technical pack: stitching through a waterproof panel voids the weatherproofing at that point and, on most brands, the warranty with it. If the pack is under warranty and you care about that, use method 4.

  • How to iron on a patch without an iron

    Application

    There is one good substitute for an iron, one that works on small patches, and a long list of suggestions that circulate online and do not work. Knowing which is which saves a garment.

    Short answer. A heat press does the job better than an iron ever will. A hair straightener works on patches up to about 2 in. A steamer, a hair dryer and a microwave do not work at all, for the same reason: heat-seal film needs dry heat, firm pressure and time held together, and those methods supply at most one of the three.

    What the adhesive actually needs

    The back of an iron-on patch is a thermoplastic film. It does not glue in the ordinary sense — it melts, flows into the weave of the fabric, and then sets as it cools. Getting that to happen needs three things at once, and every failed method fails because it is missing at least one.

    • Heat, held at the film’s melting range for the whole patch, edges included. The exact range depends on the film, which is why the supplier’s instruction sheet beats any general figure.
    • Pressure, firm and even, to push the melted film into the fabric rather than letting it sit on the surface.
    • Time, because the centre of a patch reaches temperature long before its edges do.

    And then a fourth thing that is not optional: cooling under pressure. The bond forms as the film sets, not while it is molten. Lifting the patch to check on it is how a good press becomes a bad one.

    Where every method is judged. The edge is the part that gets the least heat, the least pressure and the most abrasion. If a method cannot get the perimeter properly bonded, it has not worked.

    What works

    A heat press — the real answer

    A heat press applies a set temperature across a flat platen with measurable pressure for a timed interval. That is all three requirements, controlled, which is why every commercial decorator uses one and no commercial decorator uses an iron. Small clamshell presses are not expensive, and any local print shop will press a patch for a few pounds or dollars if you ask.

    If you are pressing yourself: use a cover sheet, set the pressure firm rather than crushing, and press again from the inside of the garment afterwards. On a cap, use a cap press or a curved platen — a flat press bridges the crown and bonds only the middle.

    A hair straightener, for small patches

    A flat iron is a genuinely good substitute at small sizes. The plates are flat, they hold a set temperature, and squeezing the handle gives you real pressure — more than most people apply with a clothes iron.

    1. Set it to a medium heat and let it come fully up to temperature. Straighteners cycle, so give it a couple of minutes.
    2. Position the patch and cover it with a thin cotton cloth or a piece of baking parchment.
    3. Clamp the plates over one section, squeeze firmly and hold. Do not slide.
    4. Work across the patch in overlapping bites, doing the perimeter twice.
    5. Turn the garment inside out and clamp along the same path from the back.
    6. Let it cool completely before you move it.

    The limit is plate size. Above about 2 in you are making so many overlapping presses that the first area has cooled before the last is done, and the result is a patch attached in patches.

    Someone else’s press

    Worth saying plainly: a local embroidery shop, print shop, sign maker or dry cleaner very often has a press and will do this while you wait. If the patch matters — a badge that took a year to earn, a jacket that cannot be replaced — this is the option to take.

    Do not improvise with an open flame, a stove, an oven or a heat gun on a garment. Synthetic fabrics ignite and melt at temperatures well within reach of those tools, and a heat gun will scorch a fabric long before the middle of a patch reaches bonding temperature.

    If the patch is not sticking

    Working through these in order finds the cause almost every time.

    1. Check the fabric. Nylon, polyester shell, waterproof, fleece, leather, waxed cotton and anything stretchy will not take a heat-seal patch. This is the answer more often than any technique problem. See the fabric list in the application guide.
    2. Check the patch actually has film. Hold it to the light and feel the back. A sew-on patch has bare cloth; an iron-on patch has a smooth, slightly shiny layer. Plenty of patches sold as “patches” are sew-on.
    3. Check for steam and moisture. Steam off, reservoir empty, and pre-press the area dry before positioning.
    4. Check the time. Most people press for a fraction of what is needed. Follow the supplier’s dwell time, and do not judge it by the centre.
    5. Check the pressure. Body weight through a straight arm, not the weight of the appliance.
    6. Check whether it cooled under pressure. Lifting to peek is the most common single mistake.
    7. Check the edges specifically. If the middle holds and the perimeter lifts, the method was fine and the coverage was not.

    If the film has already been heated and cooled several times it loses adhesion permanently. At that point re-pressing will not recover it — the patch needs stitching, or a fresh heat-seal sheet cut to shape and placed behind it.

    The honest recommendation

    Every method above is a way of attaching something temporarily. Heat-seal film softens each time the garment is washed and the edges lift first, whatever pressed them. If you want the patch to still be there in a year, the answer is not a better press — it is a stitch line just inside the border, which takes about ten minutes by hand and removes the problem completely.

  • Embroidered patch sizes, and how quotes are measured

    Specification

    Patch size is quoted in a way that surprises most people the first time: not by area, and not by the longest edge, but by the average of height and width. Two quotes for “a 4 inch patch” can describe quite different objects.

    Short answer. Most suppliers price a patch on (height + width) ÷ 2. A 3 in × 5 in patch is therefore a “4 inch” patch. For placement, 3 in is the default left chest size, 2 in suits a cap front or sleeve, and 4–5 in is jacket-back territory.

    How suppliers measure a patch

    The convention across most of the trade is to average the two dimensions. It is not an attempt to confuse anyone — it exists because stitch count, which is what actually drives cost, tracks the average dimension more closely than it tracks either edge on its own.

    How a quote is arrived at. The same patch is “3 by 5” to you and “4 inch” to the supplier. Neither is wrong; they are answering different questions.

    Two consequences worth holding on to. First, a long thin patch — a name tape, a rocker, a banner — is quoted much smaller than its length suggests, which is why name tapes are cheap. Second, when you compare two suppliers, check that both are averaging. Some quote the longest edge, and a “4 inch” patch under that convention is a noticeably bigger object.

    Ask the question directly: is that four inches averaged, or four inches on the long side? It takes one line in an email and it is the difference between comparable quotes and a false saving.

    Standard sizes and what each one is for

    These are conventions rather than rules, and they scale with the garment. On a youth garment take a size down; on a 2XL work jacket the left chest can carry 3.5 in without looking small. Placement guides covers where each of these actually sits and how the drop is measured.

    Size sets the detail limit, not the other way round

    The most common ordering mistake is choosing a size first and then being told the artwork has to change. It is worth knowing the limits before you commit.

    • Embroidered text needs about 1/4 in (6 mm) of cap height to stay legible, and closer to 5/16 in for a serif face or anything with thin strokes. Below that the letters fill in and read as a smudge.
    • Line weight. A satin-stitched line thinner than about 1 mm will not hold. If your logo has a hairline rule or a fine outline, it either thickens or it disappears.
    • Gaps between elements need to be at least as wide as the lines around them, or the thread closes them up.
    • Gradients and photographic detail do not exist in embroidery. If the artwork depends on them, the answer is a woven or printed patch rather than a bigger embroidered one.

    If the design will not survive at the size the placement demands, the fix is usually a different construction rather than a bigger patch. Patch types compared covers where woven and printed win.

    Size and price

    Price follows stitch count, and stitch count follows area. Doubling the quoted size roughly quadruples the area, so a 4 in patch is not twice the price of a 2 in patch — it is closer to four times, before any minimum-order effects.

    Two levers pull the price down without changing the finished look. Reduce thread coverage so the twill base carries a background colour instead of being stitched over — that alone can halve a stitch count. And simplify the outline: a shape that a merrow machine can follow is cheaper to finish than one that needs hot-cutting. Both are covered in patch types.

    Measuring for a placement you already have

    1. Lay the garment flat and square, and mark the placement from a seam — the high point of shoulder, the collar seam, the brim seam on a cap. Never from a hem.
    2. Cut a rectangle of paper to the size you are considering and pin it in place.
    3. Look at it on a body or a form, from about two metres. Patches that measure correctly can still read as too large; this is the only step that catches it.
    4. Check clearance: on a cap, the patch must not bridge the centre seam or run past the front panel. On a placket, it must not straddle the opening.
    5. Then convert to the quoting convention — average the two dimensions — before you ask for a price.

    If a supplier will not tell you their minimum text height or their smallest reliable line weight, that is worth more than a price difference. Those two numbers are how you tell a digitiser who tests their work from one who does not.

  • What is a hook-and-loop patch, and how do you fit one?

    Application

    A hook-and-loop patch is a two-part fastening, not a patch with a sticky back. One half lives on the patch and the other has to be attached to the garment — and almost everything that goes wrong with them comes from getting that second half wrong.

    Short answer. The patch carries the hook side: stiff, moulded, plastic-feeling. The garment carries the loop side: soft, fuzzy, cloth-like. The loop panel is stitched to the garment through all four sides. Once it is on, patches swap in seconds.

    The two halves, and which is which

    Hook-and-loop fastening is two different materials that only work as a pair. The hook face is a field of small stiff plastic hooks, moulded rather than woven, and it feels rough and slightly sharp against your palm. The loop face is a soft pile of tiny fabric loops. Press them together and the hooks catch in the loops; peel them apart and they release with the tearing noise everyone recognises.

    The convention across the whole trade is that the patch carries hook and the garment carries loop. There is a practical reason for it. Exposed hook on a garment snags jumpers, catches lint and abrades whatever it touches in a wash. Exposed loop is soft, quiet and does none of that, so the half left showing when the patch is off is the harmless one.

    If you have ever seen “hook fastener patch” or “hook backing” on a supplier’s order form, that is what it means: the patch is supplied with the hook half already attached to its back. Some suppliers list this as “velcro backing”, which is a brand name being used generically — Velcro is a trademark for one manufacturer’s hook-and-loop products, not the name of the fastening.

    If you are ordering rather than retrofitting, ask for it as hook backing by name — Threads Punching lists it that way — because “velcro backing” means different things to different makers.

    How the assembly comes apart. The join is between hook and loop, not between the panel and the garment. That is why the panel has to be stitched: it never gets to come off.

    The loop panel does all the work

    Every time the patch is pulled off, the entire force goes into the loop panel and whatever is holding it to the garment. The patch itself takes almost none of it. This is the single most useful thing to understand about the system, because it tells you where to spend your effort.

    Stitch the panel down through all four sides, close to its edge, with a thread that matches the garment rather than the panel. Do not glue it, and do not rely on a peel-and-stick backing on a panel that will be pulled monthly — adhesive holds fine until the first hot wash, and then it lifts at a corner and the corner becomes a flap that catches on everything.

    On a thin or stretchy garment, put a piece of light woven interfacing behind the panel before stitching. Without it, the panel is stiffer than the fabric around it and the stitch line becomes a tear line at the corners.

    Adding hook to a patch that does not have it

    Plenty of patches arrive with a plain or iron-on back and you want them swappable. The job is straightforward, with one thing to get right.

    1. Buy self-adhesive hook tape and cut it slightly smaller than the patch — about 3 mm inside the border all the way round. Hook that reaches the edge will show from the front and catch on the garment as you position it.
    2. Round the corners of the cut piece. Square corners are where peeling starts.
    3. Peel and press it onto the back of the patch, then leave it under a weight for an hour. The adhesive is a positioning aid.
    4. Stitch it. Run a line around the perimeter of the hook tape, through the patch base. On a merrowed patch, hide the stitching just inside the bead. This is the step people skip and the reason hook tape falls off patches.
    5. If the patch has heat-seal film on the back already, press the hook tape on top of it rather than trying to remove the film. Removing it usually takes the base cloth with it.

    Sewing hook tape is hard on a domestic machine — the plastic drags under a standard foot and blunts needles quickly. Use a Teflon or walking foot, a size 90/14 needle, and go slowly. By hand, a curved needle and a thimble is genuinely easier than fighting a machine.

    Fabrics that rule it out

    Hook-and-loop is one of the few attachment methods that works on almost anything, because the panel is stitched rather than heat-bonded. There are still two cases to think about before you cut anything.

    • Waterproof shells and technical fabrics. Stitching a panel puts a line of needle holes through the waterproof layer. On a serious rain shell that matters; either accept it, seam-seal the inside afterwards, or attach the panel to a placket or pocket flap that is already double-layered.
    • Fleece, knitwear and anything with a pile. The loop half works, but the hook half will pick up the garment’s own fibres every time the patch comes off. Expect to clean the hook more often here than anywhere else.

    Never heat-seal either half onto nylon, polyester shell fabric or anything waterproof. The face fabric glazes or melts well below the temperature the adhesive needs, and on a coated fabric the coating is destroyed even when the outside looks fine.     When to use something else

    Hook-and-loop earns its place when the patch genuinely needs to change — interchangeable unit or team identifiers, patches that come off for an inspection, a jacket that carries different badges for different events, or a child’s garment where the badge outlasts the fit.

    When the patch is going on once and staying there, it is the wrong choice. It adds bulk, it adds a rigid panel to a garment that did not need one, and it gives you a patch that can be lost.     Sizes

    Hook and loop tape is sold by width in inches, most commonly 1, 2, 3 and 4 in, and by the metre or foot. For patch work, buy tape wider than you need and cut it down; buying the exact width means every patch has to match the tape rather than the other way round.

  • How to iron on a patch — and why it lifts after one wash

    Application

    Heat, pressure and time — in that order of importance. Most failed iron-ons fail on pressure, and almost nobody tells you that.

    Short answer

    Set a dry iron to its cotton setting with steam off, cover the patch with a thin cloth, and press straight down hard for about 30 seconds without sliding. Turn the garment inside out and press the back for another 20. Let it cool completely before touching it. If it lifts later, you did not use enough pressure — a household iron rarely supplies enough on its own.

    What the adhesive actually does

    The back of an iron-on patch carries a thin film of thermoplastic adhesive. Heat melts it; pressure drives the melted adhesive into the weave of the fabric; cooling sets it as a mechanical grip around the fibres. It is not glue in the ordinary sense — nothing sticks to the surface. The bond is the adhesive wrapped around individual threads, which is why it works on a cotton drill jacket and barely works at all on a tight nylon shell with nothing for it to grip.

    That single fact explains almost every failure. Not enough heat and the film never fully melts. Not enough pressure and the melted film sits on top of the weave instead of sinking into it. Move the iron while it is melted and you shear the bond. Wear it before it cools and you peel the adhesive back off the fibres while it is still soft.

    Before you start

    • Wash and dry the garment first. New cotton shrinks. A patch applied before the first wash will pucker when the fabric around it draws in.
    • Skip fabric softener. It coats fibres, and coated fibres are exactly what the adhesive cannot grip.
    • Work on a hard surface. An ironing board has give in it, and give absorbs the pressure you are trying to apply. A worktop with a folded towel on it is better than a board.
    • Check the garment first. Nylon, most performance polyester, coated waterproofs and anything with a printed finish will scorch, gloss or melt before the adhesive is ready. See which fabrics can take an iron-on patch.

    The method

    1. Heat the iron dry. Cotton setting, steam off, and empty the reservoir if it dribbles. Steam is water, and water between the adhesive and the fabric stops the bond forming.
    2. Pre-press the spot. Five seconds on the bare fabric where the patch will sit. This drives out moisture and flattens the weave.
    3. Position it, then check it twice. Once the adhesive melts you get one attempt. Measure from a seam rather than eyeballing it — see the placement guides for the standard positions.
    4. Cover with a pressing cloth. A thin cotton tea towel or a piece of parchment. Direct iron contact glazes embroidery thread and can flatten the stitch texture permanently.
    5. Press down hard for 30 seconds. Straight down, leaning your weight into it. Do not slide the iron around — that is ironing, and it shears the bond. If the patch is bigger than the iron plate, do it in overlapping sections.
    6. Turn it inside out and press the back for 20 seconds. This is the step most people skip, and it is what pulls the adhesive through from the other side.
    7. Let it cool completely. Several minutes, untouched. The bond forms as it cools, not while it is hot. Testing the edge with a fingernail at this point is how a good application becomes a bad one.

    Why it lifted at the corner

    Corners fail first because they get the least pressure — an iron’s plate is not flat right to its edges, and the patch perimeter is where the peeling force is highest when a garment moves. Working through the causes in order of how often they are the culprit:

    Honest answer: iron-on is not permanent

    A household iron applies roughly a tenth of the pressure a heat press does, and it cannot hold an even temperature across its plate. On a garment washed weekly, a well-applied iron-on patch will typically start lifting somewhere between twenty and forty washes. On workwear that goes through industrial laundering, it will not last the month.

    If the patch needs to outlive the garment, iron it on to position it and then sew the perimeter. The adhesive holds it still while you stitch, and the stitching is what actually keeps it there. This is standard practice in the trade and it is not an admission of failure — it is the correct method. If the patch needs to come off and go back on instead, fit a hook-and-loop panel.

    Caution

    Do not iron patches onto leather, coated waterproofs, or anything with a reflective or printed finish. Leather scorches and cannot be undone. Reflective tape delaminates. On military and uniform items, check what your organisation permits before attaching anything at all — many require sewing regardless of how the patch is backed.

    Common questions

    Can I iron on a patch without an iron?

    A hair straightener works for small patches and gives better pressure than an iron because the plates clamp. A flat-bottomed pan heated on a hob works too, though the temperature is a guess. Neither is better than sewing.

    What temperature should the iron be?

    The cotton setting on a domestic iron, which is roughly 180–200°C. Most patch adhesives activate in that range. If the manufacturer gave you a figure, use theirs.

    Can I remove an iron-on patch?

    Reheat it and peel it slowly while hot, then lift the adhesive residue with more heat and a cloth. Expect a mark on the fabric where it was — the adhesive that soaked into the weave does not come out cleanly.

    Can I wash it? Can it go in the dryer?

    Wait 24 hours after applying. Then wash cold, inside out, on a gentle cycle. Avoid the dryer — the heat softens the adhesive and the tumbling peels it while it is soft. Hang drying roughly doubles how long an iron-on lasts.

    Will fabric glue work instead?

    For a patch that never gets washed, yes. For anything laundered, no — most fabric glues stiffen and crack. If heat is not an option because of the fabric, sew it.
