Velcro patches

A Velcro patch is not a separate construction. It is an embroidered, woven or PVC patch with the hook side fitted to the back, supplied with the matching loop panel for the garment. The patch is the easy half. The loop panel is the half that decides whether it lasts.

What you get

Every Velcro order ships as a pair. The hook face — stiff, moulded, plastic to the touch — is fitted to the back of your patch before it leaves us. The loop face — soft and fuzzy — comes as a separate panel cut about a quarter of an inch larger than the patch on every side, ready to be sewn to the garment.

That second panel is the part most people skip, and it is the part that fails. The loop panel takes every pull the patch will ever receive, so it is stitched down through all four sides. Adhesive does not hold it through a wash. Once it is on, patches swap in seconds and the garment is never pierced again.

Sizes and pricing

Velcro is priced as a standard backing, not an upgrade. An embroidered patch with hook and loop costs the same as the same patch with an iron-on back — from $0.75 a piece. Size is measured as the average of height and width, so a 3 by 5 inch patch is quoted as a 4 inch patch.

Woven, PVC and leather faces take a hook backing too, at those constructions’ own rates — woven from $0.95, PVC from $1.85, leather from $1.95. Full coverage embroidery adds 15%, as it does on any patch.

What Velcro is right for

The case for hook and loop is always the same: the patch has to come off, or the garment has to carry more than one patch over its life. If neither is true, a sew-on back is cheaper and stronger.

  • Tactical and service kit — plate carriers, duty shirts and field jackets already carry loop panels, so the patch only needs the hook half.
  • Unit and ID panels — name tapes, blood types, flags and call signs that change with posting or role.
  • Morale patches — the whole point is rotating them, and a collection shares one panel.
  • Backpacks and packs — a loop panel or a MOLLE grid lets a coated nylon pack take patches that heat would ruin.
  • Workwear across shifts — one garment, different names or departments, no unpicking.

Where it is the wrong choice: anything thin or stretchy, where a stitched panel puckers the fabric, and anything that will be worn once. The hook face is also abrasive — keep it away from knitwear and fleece it will share a wash with.

Common questions

Is a Velcro patch the same as a hook-and-loop patch?

Yes. Velcro is a brand name that became the everyday word for the fastening; hook-and-loop is the generic term the trade and the military use. Same product, and we quote either way.

Which half goes on the patch?

The hook, always. It is the stiff, scratchy half. The soft loop panel belongs on the garment, because it is the half that stays put and it is far kinder against skin and against whatever the garment is packed with.

Do I need the loop panel if my jacket already has one?

No. Most tactical and duty garments ship with loop panels already fitted, so tell us at quote stage and we will supply hook-backed patches only. It costs the same either way, but you will not end up with panels you have no use for.

Can the loop panel be ironed or glued on instead?

It can be tacked in place that way, but it will not stay. The panel carries the load every time a patch is pulled off, and adhesive gives up long before the stitching would. Sew it through all four sides.

Will it survive a wash?

Remove the patch first and close the panel against itself or a spare patch, so the hook face does not collect lint and catch on the rest of the load. Wash cool and inside out. Done that way, both halves outlast the garment.
