Snapback, trucker or dad cap: which patch suits which hat

Caps

A patch that looks right on a stiff snapback can look wrong on a soft dad cap, and a heat-seal patch that holds on a foam trucker front will not hold on the mesh behind it. The crown decides the patch. This guide goes cap by cap: which patch suits it, what size, and how it is fitted.

Short answer. Structured snapbacks and trucker hats take a 3 × 2 inch embroidered or leather patch, sewn on. Dad caps need a lighter woven or thin embroidered patch of 2 to 2.5 inches. Fitted and flat-brim caps suit a 2.5 to 3 inch embroidered patch. Operator caps take a PVC or embroidered patch with a hook backing on the loop panel.

Snapback patches

A structured snapback has a firm front held up by buckram, which makes it the easiest cap to patch. The front gives you about 4.5 inches across and a little over 2 inches tall, split by a centre seam, so a 3 × 2 inch rectangle or a 2.5 inch round patch sits centred over the seam without crowding the brim. Embroidered is the classic look; leather gives the premium, workwear feel that has made the leather patch snapback so common. A custom logo patch for a snapback is normally sewn on, though a heat-seal backing works if you have a proper hat press. A household iron cannot get flat pressure on a curved crown.

Trucker hat patches

A trucker hat pairs a foam or structured front with a mesh back. The front takes the same 3 × 2 inch patch as a snapback, and leather and embroidered are the two favourites. Leather on a trucker is a popular choice for men’s workwear and outdoor brands. The rule that matters is where the heat goes: a heat-seal patch can be pressed onto the foam front, but never onto mesh, which has nothing for the adhesive to grip. The style’s history is summarised in Wikipedia’s trucker hat entry.

Dad cap patches

A dad cap is unstructured: soft cotton with no buckram behind the front. A heavy patch pulls the crown out of shape, and a press flattens and distorts it. Choose a light woven patch or a thin embroidered one at 2 to 2.5 inches and sew it on. Woven also holds small lettering, down to about 2 mm, which helps when the patch is smaller.

Fitted and flat-brim caps

Fitted and flat-brim caps usually have a high, structured front that takes a 2.5 to 3 inch embroidered patch, sewn or heat-sealed. Because these caps tend to carry bold team and brand marks, keep the design simple and the lettering at 5 mm or taller.

Operator and tactical caps

Operator caps have a loop panel on the front, so the patch carries a hook backing and can be swapped. PVC is the usual choice because it is waterproof and holds raised 3D detail outdoors; embroidered works too. See custom Velcro patches and PVC patches.

Leather or embroidered on a snapback?

  • Embroidered carries colour, from $0.75 a patch at volume, and suits bold logos and short text.
  • Leather is one-colour, debossed or laser-engraved, from $1.95 a patch, and gives the premium look. See leather patches and custom leather patch hats.
  • Woven, from $0.95, is the choice when the logo has fine detail or small lettering.
  • PVC, from $1.85, is for outdoor, tactical and trucker caps that see weather.

Loose patches or finished caps

You can order the patches loose and fit them yourself or through your decorator, or have them applied to caps. For applied caps, send your logo, the cap style and colour, and the quantity; the free proof shows the patch on the cap before anything is made. We make custom logo patches for snapback caps, trucker hats and dad caps from 50 pieces. If you are fitting them yourself, the method for each cap is in how to put a patch on a hat, and design advice is in how to design a hat patch.

Common questions

What size patch for a snapback?

A 3 × 2 inch rectangle or a 2.5 inch round patch. Both sit centred on the front panel over the seam.

Can you iron a patch onto a trucker hat?

Onto the foam front with a hat press, yes. Never onto the mesh back. Sewing is the most durable option either way.

What patch is best for a dad cap?

A light woven or thin embroidered patch at 2 to 2.5 inches, sewn on. Heavy patches and pressing both distort the soft crown.
