Tackle Twill and Applique Patches

Tackle twill

Tackle twill is the cut-fabric lettering and numbering you see on sports jerseys and varsity wear: shapes cut from polyester twill and stitched down around the edge. Applique works the same way for logos. Because the colour comes from fabric rather than thread, large designs stay light, flexible and affordable.

How tackle twill is made

Each colour layer is cut from twill fabric to the shape of the letter, number or logo. The layers are placed on the garment or on a patch backing and sewn down with a zigzag or satin stitch around every edge. Two or three layers can be stacked to give the outlined look common on jerseys.

Applique uses the same idea for logos and mascots. Big areas are filled with fabric, and embroidery is used only for the edges and the detail.

Common questions

What is the difference between tackle twill and applique?

They are made the same way. Tackle twill usually means letters and numbers on team wear, and applique usually means a logo or picture made from fabric pieces.

Can you make twill patches instead of sewing on the garment?

Yes. We can make the design as a patch with a backing of your choice, so you can attach it yourself.

Is tackle twill the same as chenille?

No. Chenille has a raised, fluffy surface made from looped yarn. Tackle twill is flat fabric. Letterman jackets often combine chenille letters with twill outlines.

How much does tackle twill cost?

It is priced per order by size, number of layers and quantity. Send your artwork for a quote and a free proof.
