Shoulder patches
A shoulder patch is the patch that says which agency an officer belongs to. Most are 3 to 4.5 inches tall, embroidered on twill with a merrowed border, and sewn on. Fine text such as a city name or a motto needs enough size to stay readable. We will tell you on the proof if any lettering is too small to stitch cleanly.
If you are replacing an existing patch, send a clear photo of it next to a ruler. We redraw it and match the colours as closely as thread allows. Any difference is shown on the proof before production.
Vest and carrier patches
Vest patches go on the front and back of outer carriers. They are usually large, high-contrast and hook-backed so they can move between carriers. Text-only ID panels suit embroidery. PVC is the tougher choice if the patch will see rain, mud and frequent swaps. See custom PVC patches.
Sizes and pricing
Embroidered police patches start at $0.75 a piece. Size is the average of height and width, so a 3.5 by 4.5 inch shoulder patch is priced as a 4 inch patch. Every backing is included.

Patches larger than 4.5 inches, such as back panels, are quoted individually. 100% embroidery coverage adds 15%, as does metallic thread. The full grid is on patch pricing.
A note on authorisation
We make patches from the artwork you send. For an official department patch, the order should come from the department, or with its permission. We do not make insignia intended to let anyone pass as an officer. If a request looks like that, we will decline it.

Honest limits: thread is matched as closely as thread allows, so a small shift against a printed Pantone chip is normal, and very fine detail is flagged on the proof before you approve it.

What is the minimum order for custom police patches?
50 pieces per design. Small departments often order 100 so they have spares for new hires.
Can you copy our current shoulder patch?
Yes. Send a sharp photo and the size. We redraw it and you approve the proof before we make anything.
Which backing is best for a duty uniform?
Sew-on for the shoulder of a uniform shirt or jacket. Hook backing for vests and carriers, so the patch can move between them.
Can you add gold or silver thread?
Yes. Metallic thread adds 15% to the price. It looks good on seals and borders but is less crisp on very small text.
Do you make K9 and SWAT patches?
Yes. Unit patches are made exactly like shoulder patches, and many are ordered as hook-backed morale patches too.
