Layered laser cut designs
Layered laser cut designs stack several cut sheets to build depth — 3D wall art, layered mandalas, multi-layer signs and shadow boxes. We design custom layered SVG files where every layer is separate, numbered and aligned, so the pieces stack exactly the way the artwork intends.
A layered laser cut SVG builds depth by stacking several cut pieces. We design layered laser cut SVG files and 3D layered SVG wall art where every layer lines up, every piece survives the cut, and the finished stack looks right from across the room.

How layered designs work
Each layer is cut from its own sheet and glued on top of the one below. The back layer is usually a solid base; each layer above removes more material, so the design gains depth as it builds forward. Good layered design depends on every layer holding together on its own — a thin strand that looks fine in the finished stack can snap when that layer is cut alone.
What we design
- 3D layered wood wall art — landscapes, mountains, forests and ocean scenes
- Layered mandala SVG files with 4 to 10 layers
- Multi-layer family name signs and round door signs
- Layered animal and wildlife portraits
- Shadow boxes and light boxes
- Layered Christmas ornaments and holiday pieces
- Layered memorial and pet memorial pieces
- Topographic and contour maps built from layers
How we prepare each file
- Every layer saved as its own file, or on its own artboard, numbered from back to front
- Registration marks or matching outlines so layers line up without guesswork
- Each layer checked to hold together when cut alone
- Detail sized to your material — 3 mm plywood holds less fine detail than cardstock
- A coloured preview showing how the stack should look, so you can paint or stain layers before gluing
Choosing materials and layer count
| Layers | Look | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 3–4 | Clear depth, quick to make | Signs, ornaments, gifts |
| 5–7 | Rich depth and shading | Wall art, mandalas, portraits |
| 8+ | Dramatic, gallery-style | Large statement pieces, shadow boxes |
Most layered wood art is cut from 3 mm plywood or basswood. Paper and cardstock work for light boxes and shadow boxes with very fine detail. Tell us the material and finished size, and we balance layer count against cutting time.
3D layered wood art and multi-layer laser cut files
Multi-layer laser cut files work by giving each layer less material than the one behind it, so the background shows through as shadow. We plan the number of layers, the minimum bridge width and the alignment marks before drawing anything, so 3D layered wood art goes together in minutes rather than an evening of trial and error.
Layered designs we make
- Layered mandala SVGs and geometric layered designs
- Layered laser cut signs and family name signs
- 3D layered laser cut wall art: mountains, forests, celestial scenes and wildlife
- Layered Christmas ornaments and holiday decor
- Laser cut layered designs for paper and cardstock shadow boxes
Each file can be supplied as one SVG with numbered layers or as separate files per layer, whichever suits your software.
Interlocking and assembly-ready designs
For interlocking laser cut designs, press-fit pieces and laser cut assembly files, we size tabs and slots for your material thickness and include an assembly guide. If you paint layers different colours, we can also supply a colour guide showing which layer goes where.
Common questions
Do layered files work on a Cricut?
Cardstock layered designs, yes — Cricut Design Space reads layered SVG. Wood layers need a laser.
Can you add a name to a layered sign?
Yes. Names, dates and quotes can sit on any layer, cut out or engraved.
How long do layered designs take to cut?
It depends on size and detail. We can simplify the inner layers to save cutting time if you are producing in volume.
How many layers should a layered design have?
Most layered wall art looks best with four to eight layers. More layers add depth but also cost and assembly time.
Can layered designs be cut on a Cricut?
Yes for paper and cardstock. We simplify fine detail so a blade can cut it cleanly.
