Cap digitizing
Caps are the hardest thing to embroider well. The front is curved, stiff and sewn on a cap frame, so a flat-garment file puckers, shifts and distorts. We digitize hat logos specifically for caps — including 3D puff — so they sew straight, centred and clean.
Cap digitizing is different from flat embroidery digitizing. We digitize cap and hat logos to sew from the centre outward and from the bottom up, so designs stay straight on a curved, structured front, including 3D puff embroidery.

How cap digitizing differs
- Centre-out sewing. Stitches start at the centre of the design and work outward, pushing fabric to the sides instead of bunching it in the middle.
- Bottom-up sewing. Each element sews from the bill upward to keep the crown from shifting.
- Stronger underlay. Extra base stitching locks the stiff buckram front before the top stitches go down.
- Height limits. Most structured cap fronts allow roughly 2 to 2.25 inches of design height, and we size to fit.
- Centre seam. Six-panel caps have a seam down the middle, so we avoid fine detail landing on it.
3D puff digitizing
3D puff embroidery sews satin stitches over a layer of foam, so the design stands up from the cap. It needs its own digitizing: wide satin columns, extra stitches to cut and seal the foam at the ends, and no fine detail, which collapses under puff. We tell you which parts of your logo will puff well and which should stay flat. We also make finished 3D puff embroidery.
Placements
| Placement | Notes |
|---|---|
| Front panel | Main logo; centre-out, height-limited |
| Side panels | Small logos, text or flags |
| Back arch / back strap | Names, websites, small text |
| Beanies and knit hats | Lighter density and topping for stretch fabric |
Cap embroidery digitizing for every hat style
Hat logo digitizing has to work around the centre seam, the curve of the front panel and the stiff buckram behind it. We set the sewing order, underlay and density for structured caps, unstructured dad caps, trucker caps and flat-bill snapbacks. Cap embroidery files are also checked for size, because most cap fronts allow a limited sewing area.
3D puff embroidery digitizing
3D puff digitizing uses foam under wide satin columns to raise the design. A good puff file needs column widths in the right range, extra stitches to cut the foam cleanly, and caps on each column end so the foam does not poke through. Our 3D puff embroidery digitizing covers lettering and logos on caps, beanies and jackets, and we flag any part of a design that is too thin to puff.

Common questions
Can I use my shirt logo file on a cap?
Usually not well. Shirt files sew in the wrong order for caps and often have too much density. We can convert it into a proper cap version.
Do you digitize for flat cap embroidery and patches?
Yes. For leather or embroidered cap patches, see custom hat patches.
Which machines?
Tajima, Barudan, Ricoma, Melco, Brother and other multi-needle machines with cap frames.
Can I sew a cap file on a shirt?
It may sew, but the result will not be as good. Shirt and cap files are digitized differently, so order a flat version for shirts.
Do you digitize for flat-bill and curved caps?
Yes. Tell us the cap style and whether it is structured, and we set up the file for it.
