What a patch is made from decides how flat it sits, how it survives a wash, and how much of the quoted price is cloth rather than labour. This page covers the base cloths, the stabilisers underneath them, and the thread types that go on top.
The base cloth
Almost every embroidered patch starts as a piece of twill — a woven cloth with a visible diagonal rib. Twill is used because the weave is dense enough to hold a high stitch count without the needle tearing a path through it, and stable enough that the finished patch lies flat rather than cupping.

Weight, and why it is quoted
Twill is sold by weight, and the weight is a proxy for how much stitching the cloth can carry before it distorts. A light twill under a dense design will pucker no matter how good the digitising is. A heavy twill under a sparse design produces a patch that feels like a coaster.
You will rarely be offered a choice. What you can do is describe the design honestly when you ask for a quote — a solid-fill badge and a line-art badge of the same size are not the same job, and a supplier who knows which one they are making will pick the right ground.

Metallic and glow threads both run slower on the machine than polyester, which is where the surcharge comes from — it is machine time, not the cost of the thread itself.
What sits underneath
Between the twill and the needle there is a stabiliser — a non-woven sheet that stops the cloth shifting while the design is stitched. Cut-away stabiliser stays in place for the life of the patch and is what you want under dense work. Tear-away is removed after stitching and suits light designs on stable ground.
You will not see the stabiliser on a finished patch, but you will see the result of the wrong one: outlines that no longer meet their fills, and lettering that has drifted a fraction out of register.
